TimeOut magazine has published its prestigious annual ranking of the 20 happiest cities in the world for 2026. The study is based on the responses of more than 24,000 residents worldwide, who evaluated their quality of life, community strength, access to nature, and daily satisfaction.

To maintain the global character of the list, a rule was applied ensuring that only the highest-ranking city from each country was included. The research reveals which cities offer the best balance between urban living and personal happiness.

Bath city

1. Bath (United Kingdom) – The Champion of Happiness and Greenery

At the very top of the global list is the historic city of Bath, located in southwestern England. A staggering 93 percent of respondents stated that living in this city makes them happy, while 92 percent believe they are happier here compared to any other places they have previously lived or stayed. Residents of Bath particularly value the daily experiences the city offers, and it was also voted the best in the category of green spaces, parks, and clean nature.

Panama city

2. Panama City (Panama) – A Hub for Social Connection

The capital and largest city of Panama took second place on the global ranking. A high 93 percent of residents confirmed that the city brings them happiness. What sets Panama City apart from the rest is the ease with which people establish social connections and build friendships — 87 percent of those surveyed highlighted this as a key advantage of living there.

Guadalajara

3. Guadalajara (Mexico) – Culture, Food, and a Strong Community

Third place went to Mexico’s Guadalajara, where the overall happiness index reached 83 percent. Residents of this city gave exceptionally high marks for its rich local culture, world-class gastronomy, and the strong sense of connection and solidarity among people in the community.

The Complete Top List for 2026

What makes this year’s list particularly interesting is its great geographical diversity, showing that happiness is not a privilege exclusive to just one region of the world. Following the top three, the list of the 20 happiest cities continues with the following destinations:

  • Medellín (Colombia)
  • Kraków (Poland)
  • Jaipur (India)
  • Chicago (USA)
  • Cape Town (South Africa)
  • Shanghai (China)
  • Gothenburg (Sweden)
  • Montreal (Canada)
  • São Paulo (Brazil)
  • Valencia (Spain)
  • Prague (Czech Republic)
  • Melbourne (Australia)
  • Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)
  • Hamburg (Germany)
  • Porto (Portugal)
  • Amsterdam (Netherlands)
  • Chiang Mai (Thailand)

The ultimate conclusion of the TimeOut study is that alongside economic stability, the key factors making people happy in an urban environment are a positive atmosphere, the friendliness of fellow citizens, and the opportunity to enjoy daily simple pleasures.
